What is the dual nature of radiation and matter?
The dual nature of radiation and matter refers to the fact that both radiation and matter have both particle-like and wave-like properties. This is due to the dual nature of light, which is both a particle and a wave. Radiation, such as light, is composed of particles called photons, which have both wave-like properties, such as frequency and wavelength, and also particle-like properties, such as energy and momentum. Matter, such as electrons, also have both particle-like and wave-like properties. Electrons, for example, have both a wave-like probability distribution, known as the wave function, and a particle-like mass.
What is the nature of light ?
Light is a form of energy that is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is both a wave and a particle, and can travel through a vacuum. Light is made up of many different wavelengths, which humans perceive as different colours.
Let’s learn about each of these forms:
1. Wave nature of light:
Light exhibits wave-like behaviour when it interacts with matter. It has properties of both a particle and a wave, which can be seen in phenomena like the double-slit experiment. Light is composed of electromagnetic radiation, which is a transverse wave that propagates through space. This wave-like behaviour is exhibited in the form of oscillations in the electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to the direction of propagation. The wave nature of light is responsible for many of its properties, such as interference, diffraction, and polarisation.
2. Matter:
Light is sometimes called matter because it has mass and energy, both of which are properties of matter. Light is made up of particles called photons which have both mass and energy, making it a type of matter.
